Macrophthalmus banzai

Characteristics

The sentinel crab has a horizontal rectangular carapace that is 1-2 cm wide, with thin hairs growing around the lateral margins. It has long eyestalks with jagged lower margins on its eye sockets. The chelae are symmetrical but males have larger chelae than females. The sentinel crab has a soil-colored body and yellow chelae. These crabs prefer muddy beaches and have large populations.

Distribution

The banzai sentinel crab can be seen all around the mudflats at Gaomei Wetlands.
